What are the different microscope magnifications and what do they mean?


A microscope magnification shows how many times an object is magnified by the lenses of the microscope. A High Power Microscope has three or four distinct magnifications, they are the following:


• 40x
• 100x
• 400x
• 1000x

The power of a microscope is described with a number followed by the letter "x". For example, if through a microscope you can see the specimen 25 times larger than actual size, its magnification is 25x. You can also get the total magnification by taking the power of the objective (4X, 10X, 40X) and multiply by the power of the eyepiece, usually 10X.
